Cat Friendly Recipe: Bonito & Chicken Steamed Egg

A high protein and low calorie treat for your cat that is full of umami.

Chinese steamed egg is a go to dinner choice for us. It's smooth, slippery and so easy to make! And of course, we didn't want Lychee to feel left out, so I made a cat friendly steamed egg for her too - a nice high protein, low calorie treat!

Human food: steamed egg, minced beef stir fry, rice, broccoli

Cat food: steamed egg

Brothy Goodness

Since I can't season the steamed egg with the usual human ingredients - salt and pepper, I added flavor to the steamed egg by combing the egg with a cat friendly broth. The broth is made from simmering bonito flakes and chicken in water.

Bonito flakes are dried tuna flakes that are widely used in Japanese cuisine. Bonito flakes provide a good source of healthy protein for cats because they are high in protein, low in sodium, low in carbs and full of amino acids. Oh, the flavor is also super umami!!

In order to add another layer of flavor to the broth, I added some chicken breast. Chicken breasts are also great sources of lean proteins for your kitty. I made sure the chicken breast was cooked through and could be shredded easily.

The ingredient portions are really small as this dish is a companion dish to a human dish.

It's safe to say this dish was a real hit! Lychee is currently in a food coma!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tbsp of bonito flakes

  • 1/4 pcs of chicken breast

  • 1 cup of water

  • 2 tbsp of beaten egg

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Add the bonito flakes, chicken breast and water in a pot. Slowly bring it to a boil and then reduce heat until the mixture reaches a simmer. Simmer for 10-15 minutes.

  • Set the broth aside until it's cool enough so be poured in the egg without cooking it. Remove the flakes and chicken from the broth.

  • Combine 2 tbsp of egg and 4 tbsp of the warm broth. Pour the egg mixture through a sieve, into a ramekin. This will remove all the bubbles from the egg mixture.

  • Cover the ramekin with a cling wrap and give the wrap a small poke.

  • Steam for 10-12 minutes over medium-low heat (start steaming after water boils)

  • Cool down and season with bonito flakes and shredded chicken breast!

NOTES

  • This is not a meal replacement. It is a treat we give her once in a while!
